PriceSpotter: Vice-Presidential Palace

26 09 2007

Your weekly chance to take a stab at real estate appraisal. Submit your guesses in the comments and closest guess gets the pricespotter crown for the week.

This nice little house built in 1931 and recently restored is located in the WESLEY HEIGHTS neighborhood. The 8 bedroom, 6 and a half bathroom has apparently been home to a past vice president. The Big Reveal and bragging rights for the closest guess will be this Friday afternoon.

Another Picture and more details after the jump…

Newseum Condos

26 09 2007

Well as the “New” Newseum puts up the finishing touches, an interesting element of the building is fully taking shape. Namely, the addition of Condos slapped on the back of the building. This mixed use helped off set the cost of the building which is on some major prime real estate right across from the National Art Gallery and does look slightly out of place from the surrounding government buildings (Though it matches the new museum perfectly).

The option for mixed use is not explored often enough to help make the best use of areas and in some cases allow valuable buildings, which benefit the public, to be built in areas they otherwise might not have been. Plus bringing more residences to that area of town will help round out the mix which currently is pretty dead at night once all the tourists have gone home!

Rosslyn Central Place

21 09 2007

One of the key things lacking in the Rosslyn “down town” area is a central gathering place which distinguishes itself as a destination and event space for the area. The new Central Place development planed for the two block area surrounding the Rosslyn Metro Station bound by Lynn Street and Fort Myer Drive aims to provide just that solution.

PriceSpotter: Thompson Circle NW DC

19 09 2007

Your weekly chance to take a stab at real estate appraisal. Submit your guesses in the comments and closest guess gets the pricespotter crown for the week.

This House/Medieval Castle that just came on the market has multiple “secret doors” and passageways. Though no one famous lived here, it is in a truly prime location (Thompson Circle) so that alone gives it major points.

The Big Reveal and bragging rights for the closest guess will be this Friday afternoon.

Two more pics and the details after the jump…

Famous “for DC” Homes

19 09 2007

Though you might only be able to classify the people who lived in this North West DC home as “Famous for DC” they have all had perversely far reaching effects on the country and the world.

This one residence was the former home of:

Felix Frankfurter (Supreme Court Justice)
Henry Kissinger (National Security Advisor and Sec of State under Nixon)
Cyrus Vance (Sec of State under Carter)
Location: 3018 Dumbarton Ave NW

Rosslyn 1962

18 09 2007

Take a look at what Rosslyn looked like in 1962 (top photo). You can see the River Place Apartments near the top right which are basically the only structures still prominent on the Rosslyn skyline to this day.

By 1967, the old rail tracks had been removed, the new yet to be named Roosevelt bridge was built and Rt 66 was ready to bring the rising commuter population into the district from VA (second photo).

Georgetown – First New RowHouses in 10 Years

18 09 2007

Though development in Georgetown is common, an entire new development of row houses is not, which is just what we have with the new Wormley Row.

Just off the main drag of M street, Wormley Row is incorporating one old building with almost an entire block of new ground up structures to build 13 (extremely large, even for the area) row homes.

More on the scene construction photos, and what’s behind the strange name after the jump…
